Fiji’s film tax rebate attracts overseas interest

Fiji’s film tax concession has generated much interest overseas, said Fiji Audio Visual Commission board chair Sharon Smith-Johns.

The Film Rebate had been increased from 15 percent to 35 percent in the government’s 2009 Budget delivered last year.

“The response to that has been very good.  Some producers will take advantage of tax rebates and there has been a lot of interest, now that we’ve taken it to 35 percent.

“There’s a lot of interest from overseas in coming here because now we are competitive with the rest of the world,” Smith-Johns said.

The increase in rebate was targeted mainly at overseas fully-funded film productions and is a response to the competitiveness worldwide of film tax rebates.

Last week, FAVC announced the making in Fiji of two movies by Bollywood director Abbas Mastan.

They will be among the first this year to utilize this concession.
